General Introduction

Biotechnology is defined as the use of microorganisms, enzymes and their systems in production and service sectors. Research and education studies in the field of "Biotechnology", which is important in developed and developing countries, are supported by national and international organizations; some countries are aspiring to be world leaders with the significant investments made in this field. In Türkiye, the State Planning Organization declared biotechnology to be the science of the 2000s and the key industry, and it was noted that much more development is expected in the biotechnology sector than in other sectors in the coming years.

Biotechnology is a multidisciplinary and comprehensive branch of science. Therefore, interdisciplinary joint studies are essential. Biotechnology has a wide range of applications in many industrial and scientific areas. The food industry, where it is used in many areas, from the production of classic alcoholic beverages, etc., known since ancient times to the production of new and specific products in the light of technological developments today, constitutes one of the most important application areas of biotechnology.

In our country, it seems an inevitable necessity to keep up with the new developments in the field of biotechnology and to carry out studies in wider and different research areas. Following scientific developments in the world closely and contributing to these developments through research will undoubtedly be possible by explaining and introducing biotechnology to the young generation and directing their interest in this field. The duty of the biotechnology science branch is to introduce biotechnology and its basic principles to students, as well as to ensure that our country progresses in this field through research activities carried out in the science branch and joint projects carried out with industry.

The study group conducts research in the fields of production and characterization of various fermented products (olives, pickles, wine) with new methods, enzyme production and applications in food systems, production of enzymes and other biotechnological products by using waste as raw material. In addition, gene cloning, recombinant protein production, and protein biochemical and biophysical characterization are carried out in the molecular biology laboratory, and research is carried out in the fields of bacteria-human interactions and structural biology.
